The Sask Social Club could not operate without the many volunteers who help to run events. Each event that we run is unique, as well. In some cases, it is a large scale event, like Roughrider parties. For the Grey Cup here in Calgary in the year 2000, we had over 200 volunteers donate their time over the three days we operated the party. In other cases we have smaller, more intimate events like Drop-Ins to the Legion, where all you have to do is show up and host. Whatever the scenario, we like to think that people have a good time doing this and there are many repeat volunteers who come back and help out time after time. Note that we have an Immediate Need below!

Below you can find some photos of the volunteers hard at work at the Ripper!

Just Some General Volunteer Stuff...

Why Volunteer?
A couple of reasons, really. On one hand, in order to operate an event there need to be people who can plan it out and more people yet, to set it up, run it and in some cases clean up after (not that there is too much of that involved at most of our events).

Another reason why it’s a good thing to do is to simply socialize and meet people. There is probably no better way to meet new people than to volunteer for an event. It gives a sense of being part of something and pulling together. (cue the soulful violins!)

What does the Board do?
The Sask Social Club is governed by a Board of Directors which is elected by the membership each year at the Annual Meeting. They serve for one year. Their responsibility is to attend approximately one meeting per month and determine the kinds of events the club runs. They also deal with issues like administration, membership, public relations, charity involvements, relationships within the Calgary community and future planning.

One board member takes responsibility for each event the club puts on. In some cases the event itself is run by a volunteer from within the club, but they work with the assigned board member to make sure everything is running smoothly. Anyone can run for the board, but you must have been on the SSC board for at least one year before you can be the grand Poo Bah (i.e. President).

What do you get out of Volunteering?
Probably some friendships you may not have had before taking part. This is usually the most rewarding thing. The pulling off of a successful event makes people feel good as well! As far as actual tangible rewards, the objective of the club is to make sure people are treated well during their volunteer time, usually through free participation (no admission fees for example). We also hold some sort of volunteer appreciation at the end of the year to say thanks to those who helped out.

How do you get involved?
Pretty simple really. Take a look at our Events page and it will give you some idea as to what kinds of events the Sask Social Club operates. You can then email us and simply ask to be put on a volunteer list. Another method is to contact the person in charge of an event and ask her or him if they need any help.

That pretty much is it for the volunteer aspect of the Saskatchewan Social Club. Those of us from the “Motherland” have often volunteered for things in our own home towns, and Calgary itself is renowned for the volunteerism displayed throughout the city. We think you might have a great time if you donated some of your own time, so please get involved!
